Historical Note
James Holbrook was born in 1944. He graduated from Grinnell College with a BA in 1966 and a MA from Indiana University in 1968. Beginning in 1969, he served in the United States Army during Vietnam. Holbrook was awarded a Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal. After his military service, Holbrook received a JD from the University of Utah. After law school, he clerked for the chief judge of the federal district court for Utah and later served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Salt Lake City, Utah. Holbrook practiced law with a focus on civil and federal white-color criminal litigation.
Holbrook is a frequent speaker and educator on alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and has taught and presented on mediator and arbitrator skills in the United States and internationally. In 2002, Holbrook joined the faculty at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law. In 2007 he taught negotiation and mediation skills courses at three law schools in southwest India. In 2008 he helped design and present a month-long rule-of-law training course for Afghan prosecutors in Salt Lake City. In 2009 he served as chief of party and principal investigator for the Global Justice Program: Iraq, which provided legal assistance to the government and judiciary of Iraq. Holbrook received numerous awards for his teaching and for his work in mediation, including: the Peter W. Billings Sr. Award for Excellence in Teaching (2000, 2012); the Peter W. Billings Sr. Dispute Resolution Award by the Utah State Bar (2002); the International Academy of Mediators' Sid Lizak Award for Excellence (2010); the Peacekeeper Award from the Utah Council on Conflict Resolution (2011); and the Alumni Award from Grinnell College for his work on conflict resolution (2012). Content Description
The James Holbrook photograph collection consists of 1 box containing 102 black-and-white and color photograph prints. Folders 1-6 depict James Holbrook's service in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict in 1969; some of these prints have handwritten captions on the backs identifying people. Many of the photographs were taken at Đồng Tâm Base Camp in the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam. Other than people, subjects include: trucks; weapons; helicopters; graves; buildings. Folders 7-10 depict Holbrook's career and education. Folders 11-12 depict friends and pets.
