Biographical Note

Henry Harkson (also spelled Harksen) was born in Denmark in 1863. He came to the United States in 1883, where he met his wife, another Danish immigrant named Clara Johnson. The family moved to Portland in 1906, where Henry entered the banking and real estate business. He co-founded Otto & Harkson Realty with Louis C. Otto, and helped organize the Scandanavian-American Bank in Portland and the Multnomah State Bank in Lents. In 1912, Harkson was appointed the Danish Vice-Consul of Oregon, an office he held until 1933, when his son Sherman became vice consul; Sherman held the position until 1948. Like his father, Sherman worked in the real estate business. Sherman Harkson's daughter Rohde married Glenn Joseph Bingman in 1946, and the two had a son and a daughter, Paul and Mary.
