Historical Note

Glenn Allen Conner was born on May 18, 1894 near Coon Rapids, Iowa, to parents Hugh and Lydia. The family lived in many western states, settling in Douglas, Wyoming, in 1904.Conner worked as a ranch-hand in Wyoming for many years of his youth, giving him ample material to write about in later years. His autobiography Memoirs of a Tumbleweed tells many stories of his life growing up in the West. Conner served as a member of the Wyoming National Guard during the Mexican -American border skirmish of the nineteen-teens. On May 27, 1920, he married Nellie Maude Sanford in Rawlins, Wyoming, and later went on to become a civil engineer for the state of Wyoming and the U.S. government. Conner was best known for his work as a western fiction writer. His work appeared in publications such as West Magazine, Ranch Romances, Cowboy Stories, Ace-High Magazine, Quick Trigger Stories, and Western Trails, among others. Glenn A. Conner died on June 17, 1974 at the age 80.

Content Description

The Glenn A. Conner Papers are comprised mainly of his writings. Approximately 500 both complete and incomplete short story manuscripts are included. Repetitions in titles are results of different stages of revision. Photographs of various western places and subjects, including the Wyoming towns of Douglas, Saratoga, and Big Horn Canyon, are included in the collection. Various (often unidentified) photographs of family, friends, and Conner himself are included.Other written material includes a copy of Conner’s book Thunderbolt and newspaper articles he published in Wyoming’s Sheridan Press.Also included is a short story and newspaper article by Dr. W. A. Allen, entitled “Boating Through the Big Horn Canyon.” Photographs accompany the work. In addition, the collection contains a watercolor, titled “Snow on the Mesa,” by western writer William Colt MacDonald (signed ColtMac) which was sent to Conner as a Christmas card.

The Glenn A. Conner Papers were given to the American Heritage Center by Mr. Glenn Conner in 1966. Conner also wrote an autobiography titled Memoirs of a Tumbleweed between 1966 and 1973, which he subsequently donated to the Center
