Biographical Note

Chris Roberts was born in 1948 in London, the United Kingdom. He attended the University of Montana from 1966 to 1973, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 1970 and his Master of Arts in 1973. While attending the University, Roberts was one of the founding members of the Kyi-yo Club [now the Kyiyo Native American Student Association]. Since then he has attended and photographed most of the Kyiyo powwows and powwow participants. Roberts began photographing powwows for research to help him create his own powwow dance clothes and regalia. Since 1966, Roberts has danced in powwows and photographed the powwow circuit. He has published two books of powwow photographs, Powwow Country (1992) and Powwow Country: People of the Circle (1998). Since 1995, he has produced an annual photographic calendar titled "Powwow".
