Historical Note

Frederick L. Nussbaum (1885-1958), a historian, was educated at Cornell University (1906) and the University of Pennsylvania (1915). He worked in the Philippine Islands from 1907-1909. After serving in the Army during World War I, he taught history at Temple University before going to the University of Wyoming, where he was on the history faculty from 1925-1956, specializing in European economic history. Cecil Rigby Nussbaum (1897-1992), a pianist, received her bachelor's degree in music with honors in 1929. She married Frederick Nussbaum in 1918. Together the two traveled all over the world. After her husband's death, Cecil Nussbaum worked for Senator Gale McGee and continued her travels across the U.S. and abroad.

Content Description

The collection includes correspondence (1882-1991); diaries (1906-1987); an extensively edited typewritten manuscript for the book "The Triumph of Science and Reason" (1952) by Frederick Nussbaum; articles by Nussbaum; a report by Nussbaum on the University of Wyoming Library (1948); newspaper clippings; and miscellaneous materials. Many of the newspaper clippings and much of the 1924 correspondence relates to Nussbaum's dismissal from Temple University in 1924. Cecil Nussbaum's papers include work for Senator Gale McGee; and travel diaries and scrapbooks that document the lives of the Nussbaums from the early 1900s to the 1990s.
