Historical NoteReturn to Top

Eugene Poddany was a composer and music director. He was born in Hardin, China and graduated from Hollywood High School in 1937. He studied music composition and orchestration with Ernest Toch and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. In the early 1940s he toured Europe while directing a classical orchestra. When he returned to America he started writing music for motion picture cartoons. The film production companies that he worked for include Walter Lantz Productions, John Sutherland Productions, and Metro- Goldwyn Meyer. He composed music for Tom & Jerry, Woody the Woodpecker, Foghorn Leghorn, Tweety Bird, Bugs Bunny, and Dr. Seuss TV specials “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “Horton Hears a Who!” Poddany also wrote the music for the 1966 Academy Award winning short “The Dot and the Line."

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

These scores include work for the Tom & Jerry Show, the Woody the Woodpecker Show, “The Dot and the Line,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Horton Hears a Who!”, other animated productions, and television commercials. The papers also consist of personal files and written works by Eugene Poddany.
