Historical Note
M. Hughes Miller (1913-1989) was a publisher and real estate developer. He was vice president and general manager for Charles E. Merrill (1939-1956), vice president of American Book-Stratford Press (1956-1958), and president of Bobbs-Merrill Company (1959-1963). From 1963-1986 he was with Book Publishers Project, Inc., and from 1986-1989 Book Publishers Enterprises, Inc. Miller was the founder of the Weekly Reader Children's Book Club in 1953 and also president of Four Seasons Estates, Inc., which developed land near Lake Tahoe, California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Miller married actress and writer Mala Powers in 1970.
Content Description
The 30 cubic feet of materials relating to Miller's publishing career include correspondence, financial information, contracts, sales and promotional materials, subject files, memoranda, ledgers, and miscellaneous other materials. Many of the files relate to the Bobbs-Merrill Company and the Weekly Reader Children's Book Club.
The 36 cubic feet of materials relating to the Four Seasons Estates, Inc. development at Lake Tahoe include financial records, minutes, correspondence, contracts, legal documents, blueprints, blueprint maps, photographs, advertising materials, and miscellaneous other materials.
There is a small amount of biographical material on M. Hughes Miller and Mala Powers.
