Historical Note
Bower Aly was born in 1903 in the state of Missouri. Aly graduated from Southeast Missouri State College with a baccalaureate degree in 1925 before moving on to Missouri State University (1926) and Columbia University (1941) where he received a master's and Doctoral degree (Regular). Aly Later spent time at Southeast Missouri State (1926-1930) and Missouri State University (1930-1957) as a member of the teaching faculty before undertaking a short stint as a visiting professor at Columbia University. Finally, in 1957, Aly was offered a position at the University of Oregon which he held until retirement in 1973 (Regular). Throughout his career, Aly became an established scholar in the area and history of American Public Address and served on numerous councils, such as The Speech Communication Association, the President's Advisory Council and President of the Friends of the Library (Regular). He also authored and co-authored numerous books, including American Short Speeches: An Anthology and The Rhetoric of Alexander Hamilton.

Content Description
The majority of records in this collection, dated 1815-1900, document speeches given by Unites States senators and congressmen. Records include transcripts of state of the union addresses and transcripts of speeches regarding numerous topics including bank reform, tariffs, and American coinage.
Subject files includes teaching files on public addresses and rhetoric, research materials, and correspondence.
The collection also contains several publications incuding, Rhetoric: Its Natural Enemies, An Inventory of the Library of Congress Collection of Texts of American Speeches and James Love: A Critical Study of the Life and Career of an Early Missouri Schoolmaster>.
