Historical Note

M. Frederik Smith was a business executive who worked for many years in the related fields of planning and conservation and outdoor recreation. He was an associate of Laurance Rockefeller and a consultant to the Rockefeller family. He wrote an unpublished biography of Laurance Rockefeller.

Content Description

The collection contains materials related to Fred Smith’s conservation work and interests, including public interest advertisements regarding the Echo Park Dam (Dinosaur National Monument) controversy in Colorado, memoranda, pamphlets (1972), reports, and photocopied speeches by Smith (1956-1972). There is also a copy of the book, The Legacy of Bessie Dashiell (1978) by the Woodstock Foundation. Dashiell was a woman who died of cancer in 1891 at the age of 18 and sparked the original fight against the disease.
