Historical Note
In the early days of what would become Washington State University, the only on-campus living option for women was Stevens Hall. Some of those who lived off-campus organized a private campus club which became known as the Lohese Club, from the motto Love, Health, and Service. They were allotted a room off the campus YMCA.
During WWII, the number of off-campus women rose dramatically, and the private Lohese Club became a public Off-Campus Girls club in October of 1943. The name appears to have changed to Off-Campus Women circa 1965 or so.
Content Description
The collection is primarily one scrapbook and several folders of loose materials. They fall into three timeframes. Correspondence, 1922-1927 to the group from a former member then working as a missionary in Egypt. These are at the beginning of the scrapbook. Then, materials from the Off-Campus Girls Club from 1943-1947. These are the rest of the scrapbook, plus some of the loose materials. Finally, administrative papers, mostly 1956-1957, related to women’s activities on the WSC campus. These are all within the foldered loose materials.
