Historical Note

Junius Stowell Romney was born on 10 January 1903 to Junius and Gertrude Stowell Romney in Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. He moved with his family to Texas, then California, and finally settled in Salt Lake City in 1913. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Great Britain and was associate editor of the Millennial Star while there. He moved to Washington, D.C. around 1926 where he attended George Washington School of Law. Romney married Ruth Stewart in 1928 and graduated from law school two years later. He served in various capacities in the LDS Church and died in 1980.

Content Description

The Junius S. Romney papers (1903-1973) consist of a seven-volume autobiography by Romney and a seventeen-page discourse given by his father, Junius Romney Sr. Romney's autobiography includes such topics as his early life in Mexico, his church mission to the British Isles, his work for the FBI, his law practice, travels, and interaction with church and civic leaders and family. The discourse by Junius Romney Sr. details some of the events that led to the final exodus of Mormons from Mexico following the Mexican Revolution.
