Historical Note

Chief Joseph Dam was constructed from 1950 through 1958, with additional turbines being installed between 1973 and 1979. It is a concrete gravity dam on the Columbia River, and is operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers Chief Joseph Dam Project Office, with the electricity it produces being marketed by Bonneville Power Administration. It generates around 10,000 gigawatt-hours annually. The dam is named for the Nez Perce chief who spent his last years in exile on the Colville Indian Reservation.
