Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The George D. Pyper photographs consist primarily of those items which Pyper collected during his nearly thirty years as manager of the Salt Lake Theater. Consequently the majority of the collection deals with theater and drama in Salt Lake City from the early 1860's to the 1930's. Included are not only photographs of local performers but also pictures of musicians, opera stars, actors and actresses from all over the world who came to perform at the Salt Lake Theater. As well as performers, the collection includes photographs of the theater itself, its management, and crew. In addition to theater material, there are photographs of people and places pertaining directly to Pyper's life. These include pictures of Pyper's trips abroad, his involvement with the Tabernacle choir, and several portraits of prominent non-theater individuals.

The collection consists of 1231 photographs, 34 oversized photographs, and 108 glass lantern slides. There are some negatives available and numerous duplicate prints.
