Historical Note
William Stetson Merrill (1866-1969) was employed by the Newberry Library in Chicago from 1889 to 1929. His library science book titled Code for Classifiers was published in 1928 and became a classic in its field. Merrill died in 1969 at the age of 103 as the oldest living alumnus of Harvard University.
