Content Description

The Escalante National Monument proposal collection (1934-1969) contain photocopies of correspondence, news clippings, reports, and chronologies. These files chronicle the first proposed establishment of a monument in the Glen Canyon area in the 1930s. Issues such as mining and grazing rights which were prominent in the debate over the establishment of the monument by President Clinton were raised in the 1930s. In the correspondence are letters supporting and opposing the monument by various government agencies and private individuals. These letters also reveal that the volatile political nature of creating the monument was already present in the first proposal.
