Historical Note

Mark A. Greene was the director of the University of Wyoming, American Heritage Center from 2002 to 2015. Under his direction, the AHC performed a six-year comprehensive collection analysis, developed its first formal collecting policy, cataloged a large percentage of its collections, and implemented one of the nation’s largest reappraisal and deaccessioning programs. Greene also partnered with his colleague, Dennis Meissner, to write “More Product, Less Process: Revamping Traditional Archival Processing.” This article discussed their new theory on Arrangement and Description; it was published in the 2005 Fall/Winter issue of American Archivist. MPLP was implemented at the AHC and began to be utilized across the country as a way to address large processing backlogs.
