Biographical Note

Sven and Gunter Hoiness were born in Norway during the early 1860s and immigrated to the United States in 1885. The brothers began a sheep raising operation together in the Red Lodge township of Carbon County, Montana, sometime after their arrival in the territory. Records in this collection indicate that the brothers expanded their endeavors to include other business opportunities; though Carbon County historical records do not indicate a formal storefront operated by the brothers.

Content Description

This collection contains an account ledger from the Hoiness brothers’ business operation, 1891-1918, Carbon County, Montana; School District #40 Clerk’s Record Book, 1916-1933; and School District #51 Clerk’s Record Book, 1915-1923. Hoiness Brothers ledger details individual account activities for their business activities. Both of the Hoiness Brothers recorded business transactions and often employed slightly different methods of record keeping. The brothers engaged in business ventures ranging from dry goods sales to credit advances, and from livestock exchanges to bulk wheat sales. The school district records each show the township number, range number, and meridian of the school. It also includes a description of the school’s boundaries, the dates of the election of clerks and trustees, minutes of School Board meetings, the school census report, receipts, annual reports, copies of teacher’s reports, and lists of text books and library books.
