Historical Note

On February 13, 1893, the Montana State Legislature passed "an act to establish, locate, maintain, and govern the University of the State of Montana" in Missoula. This "Charter Day" still receives an annual February celebration at the university with a reception and awards ceremony. The University of Montana first opened for classes in 1895, moving to its current location at the base of Mount Sentinel in 1899. Initially called the University of Montana, the university went through several name changes. With the establishment of the Montana University System in 1913, it became the State University of Montana. The name changed again in 1935 to Montana State University. In 1965, the institution again became the University of Montana as decreed by state legislation that renamed five of the state's colleges to "more accurately describe the schools' respective functions." As of 2016, the University of Montana has four schools and six colleges that boast over 50 departments offering numerous undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university also offers a full array of academic clubs, athletic teams, and campus-wide events that attract students from all over the United States and the world.

Content Description

This collection contains moving images in various formats including VHS, DVD, U-Matic, 16mm, 2 inch and 8mm. All of the film in this collection pertains to various events and activities either hosted or participated in by the University of Montana including sporting events, lectures, parades, building openings, academic program highlights, and convocations. There are also promotional materials for prospective students such as TV spots and introductory videos. Materials originated from various departments on campus and will eventually be reintegrated into their originating collection.

Materials retain the order in which they were originally processed; the actions of the original processor are unknown.

Custodial History

The majority of these materials were transferred from their originating office at the University of Montana to Archives and Special Collections. The original locations of the earliest films are unknown.

Future Additions

Additions to this collection are expected.

Processing Note

Films were renumbered and minimally reorganized during processing, duplicate films were placed together (often a VHS and/or DVD copy of an original 16 mm or 8mm film) and given the same number. This collection was previously named UM Film with no collection number. Materials in this collection originated in various departments and offices throughout the university, the intention of this guide and initial collection is to provide an access point for these materials prior to their reintegration into their originating collections.

In 2021, all 16 mm motion picture film reels were cleaned, cored, and rehoused for preservation purposes. All 8mm motion picture film reels were cleaned, placed on new reels, and rehoused for preservation purposes.

In 2024, 10 of the motion picture films had digital preservation copies made.

In 2024, VHS tapes were digitized for preservation purposes.

In 2024, VHS tapes from accession 1998-054 were added to this collection.

In 2025, 3 DVDs of the University of Montana's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Lecture event, which were previously assigned video numbers 193, 194, and 196, were removed from this collection and added to the Mansfield Library's general collection.

Video Tapes 101 and 154 were unable to be digitized due to their condition.

Separated Materials

The following guest lectures, given in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, were removed and added to the library's general (circulating) collection:
