Historical Note

Wendell Phillips (1921-1975), the largest oil concessionaire in the world, was the economic advisor and representative for the Sultan of Oman. An archaeologist and explorer, he led the largest scientific expedition from the United States: the University of California African Expedition (1947) and was founder and president of the American Foundation for the Study of Man. He established the Wendell Phillips Center for Intercultural Studies at the University of the Pacific and a Wendell Phillips Centre for Advanced Theological Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.

Content Description

The collection contains newspaper clippings regarding Wendell Phillips and his career as oil concessionaire in Indonesia, Haiti, and the Arab region in the early 1970s; pamphlets related to college convocation talks by Phillips (1968); books by Phillips and others about the Arab region and archaeology there. There is a production sharing contract between the Indonesian State Oil Corporation and Phillips with accompanying newspaper and magazine clippings about the agreement (1970). There are also a concession contracts (with accompanying newspaper articles) between the Republic of Korea (1970), Oman (1970), and the Republic of Haiti (1972). Included is a film strip and guide, You Discover Saudi Arabia (1971).
