Historical Note

The University of Montana has been offering courses in Anthropology since the 1930s as part of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Welfare. The first Anthropology professor was Dr. Harry H. Turney-High, who taught through WWII. He was followed by Dr. Carling Malouf. President Robert Johns instituted the linguistics program within the Department of Anthropology during his 1963 to 1966 tenure. The Department of Anthropology became a separate department in 1968.

This collection contains records generated by the Department of Anthropology between 1965 and 1976 including correspondence, faculty search committees, meeting minutes, faculty senate proceedings, curriculum and program reviews, research grants and miscellaneous materials.

The collection is largely arranged in alphabetical order by year, reflecting the way the files were received by the Archives.

Custodial History

These files were in the position of the Anthropology department until their transfer to the Archives in 1980 and 1992.

Acquisition Information

The Anthropology Department transferred these records to the Archives in 1980 and 1992.

Future Additions

Additional files may be transferred to the Archives by the Anthropology Department.

Processing Note

The collection is largely arranged in alphabetical order by year, reflecting the way the files were received by the Archives.

Separated Materials

Student honors exams were removed from the collection and discarded.
