Historical Note
Philip Babcock Gove was an editor with G & C Merriam Company (later Merriam-Webster) the publisher of Webster's Dictionaries from 1946-1967. He served as editor-in-chief of "Webster's Third New International Dictionary" in 1962.

Collection contains correspondence between Gove's parents, John Gove and Florence Babcock Gove (1892-1904); Gove's professional and personal correspondence, much of it with his wife Grace Potter Gove (1930-1973); 1 photograph album; 1 scrapbook; 2 speeches; and records of the G & C Merriam Company, including the editorial board's minutes of meetings and miscellaneous financial reports (1945-1957).
