Historical Note

Paul Eliot Green (1894-1981) was a playwright known for inventing the symphonic drama. A symphonic drama is unique for its combination of plays with historical themes, music, pageantry, and usual outdoor setting. Green won a Pulitzer Prize in 1927 for his play “In Abraham’s Bosom.” His symphonic dramas often drew from American Revolutionary history.
