Summary
Dr. Herbert C. Miller, D.D.S., M.D., founded the North Pacific College of Dentistry in 1898. As president, he gave North Pacific College of Dentistry to the State of Oregon in 1945. The collection consists of personal papers and photographs and professional documents from Miller's career as an early dentist in the Pacific Northwest.

Biographical Note

Dr. Herbert C. Miller, D.D.S., M.D., was born June 19, 1864, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Educated at the Missouri Dental college, he obtained his D.D.S. in 1885 and completed an M.D. at St. Louis Medical College in 1887.

Miller began his practice in Nebraska City, Nebraska, 1887; arrived in Portland January 7, 1891, where he entered his practice; became an American citizen on January 6, 1894; founded North Pacific College of Dentistry in 1898 (the building was erected in 1910); discontinued practice and devoted time soley to school in 1912. As president, he transferred North Pacific College of Dentistry to the State of Oregon in 1945.

Miller died on December 20, 1947 at his new home in Newport, Oregon.

The collection consists of certificates, registration cards, photographs and slides, and other personal items which identify the Miller family and document examples of their various achievements and roles in life.

Administrative Information

Future Additions

Additional materials have been added as the family of Herbert C. Miller donates materials to the School of Dentistry and then in turn are transferred by Dr. J. Henry Clarke. The first materials were donated in June of 2010 and 1.5 linear feet were donated in February of 2012.
