Historical NoteReturn to Top

Beginning in the mid-1970s, faculty and administration at Whitman explored strategies to provide students with a more balanced liberal arts curriculum. Freshman seminars were introduced in 1975. In 1977, a committee was formed to explore additional options for expanding the curriculum, and a General Studies program was approved in 1978. The program was implemented in 1980, including Freshman Core, distribution requirements, and a Senior Colloquiam.
