Historical Note

Doris Marie Snyder Melich (1913-2007) was born 8 April 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Edward H. and Marie C. Snyder. She attended East High School and graduated with a BA from the University of Utah in 1934. In 1978 she received a Merit Honor Award from the university's Emeritus Club. Doris married Mitchell Melich on 3 June 1935, and they had four children. The couple lived for 30 years in Moab, Utah, before returning to Salt Lake City. Doris established Moab's first Girl Scout troop and continued to be involved with the Girl Scouts of America (GSA) throughout her life. Doris contracted arthritis in her early 40s and her response was to become involved with arthritis organizations. She served on the board of the Utah Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, served with National Arthritis Advisory Board, and worked with the National Arthritis Institute. In 1988 she was named to the board of the Utah Arts Council, on which she served for nine years. Doris and Mitchell lived in Washington, DC, from 1969 to 1973, while Mitchell served as Solicitor of the Department of the Interior. Doris continued to be active in the community until her death on 27 November 2007.
