Biographical Note
Walter Henne left his home in Springfield, IL in December 1883, and traveled to Spokane Falls, Washington Territory. Later that month Henne and several others went to Douglas County, in central Washington, where they surveyed and staked the townsite of Okanogan, which became the county seat. Okanogan lost the county seat to Waterville in 1887. Henne also staked a homestead claim not far from the newly platted town, and continued to farm until he moved to Spokane. He farmed near Hillyard and managed his Douglas County wheat properties.
Content Description
Included in the collection is Henne’s diary, which begins with his departure from Springfiled, IL in 1883, and covers in some detail his activities as a homesteader until 1885.
Also in the collection is a volume of personal accounts, 1903-1911, 1937-1950, and correspondence from A.B. Dorsey & Son, a land management firm in Waterville that handled Henne’s Douglas County wheat lands, 1941-1953. There are also a few stock certificates and a small group of typical turn-of-the-century funeral orations.
