As a baby she used to sit around on Seattle door [. . .] with Angeline until the authorities took her away and sent her to Chemawa. If not too late, it wd [sic] be nice for the University of Washington to hunt her up and educate her. I had her to wash dishes and tend baby and she was very sweet and intelligent. Yours, Eva Emery Dye. Oregon City, Ore. April , 1905

In 1885, the school moved to a site five miles north of Salem, OR. The year 1926 saw the peak enrollment at Chemawa; almost 1,000 students were enrolled. Unlike many Indian schools, it continued to operate through the deades and today Chemawa Indian School is the oldest continuously operating Native American boarding school in the United States.
