Biographical Note

Oscar William Worthwine was born in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1885. He attended and played football at the University of Chicago. After college, he moved to Boise, Idaho where he initially taught US History at Boise High School. He also coached football, boys and girls basketball, and boys track. In 1913, he started at the law firm of Hawley, Puckett & Hawley, where he served as partner from 1920-1940. He was admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1934.

Worthwine served on numerous committees and boards including the Idaho State Bar Association, Boise Junior College Board of Trustees, Boise Chamber of Commerce, and the Idaho Code Commission. Of particular note, he facilitated the building of the Boise Junior College's Bronco Stadium, which opened in 1950.

Worthwine died on February 9, 1960.

Content Description

The Oscar W. Worthwine Papers contains articles, photographs, film, and memorabilia related primarily to his time as a college football player at the University of Chicago and athletics coach at Boise High School. There are a few books about football, some of which mention Worthwine. Also included is material relating to World War II. Photographs are of football teams from the University of Chicago, various athletic teams from Boise High School including women's basketball, and family photos. Some of the Boise High School football photos show Public School Field (now Dona Larsen Park).
