Historical Note

James R. Jewell attended Eastern Washington University and attained his Master's Degree in History in 1995. Jewell then moved on to West Virginia University to earn his Ph.D. in U.S. History, with his research centered on 19th Century U.S. and the Civil War. Jewell is currently a Professor of History at North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Jewell always had a keen interest in military history, and through this interest he began working as the director of the Northwest World War II Oral History and Research Project. Jewell chose Eastern Washington University to house the project.

This collection contains letters to and from Howard T. East. East was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 16, 1923. He attended Oak Park High School until 1941. East then attended Colgate for one year and then Northwestern for a quarter before being drafted for World War II. East was in the service for nearly three years with stays in France and Germany. After the service, East made his residence in California, and moved to San Francisco in 1948 to work in the insurance industry. He would work in this vocation for nearly sixteen years. East began studies at San Francisco State University in 1964, where he attained a Master's in History. East was hired by Menlo College in 1965, and he remained there until his retirement in 1995.
