Biographical Note
M. Irene Grieve came to Spokane with her parents in 1903. She graduated from Washington State College and attended the University of Oregon Medical School, interning in Chicago before returning to Spokane to enter general practice. Throughout her life she was active in civic and medical organizations. In 1931 Dr. Grieve and Dr. Joseph Aspray (1897-1938), a Spokane radiologist, compiled a “Health Survey of Spokane, Washington.”
Content Description
The survey, an original typescript, is concerned with the activities of official and non-official agencies and public health. Private agencies include the Spokane County Tuberculosis League and the Junior League. There is a general discussion of the Spokane Health Department, followed by a more detailed study of Health Department monitoring and control in the areas of communicable diseases, venereal disease, milk supply, foodstuffs, barber shops, beauty parlors, bath houses, public toilet facilities, water supply, excreta disposal, general sanitation, and industrial conditions. Appended to the survey are copies of all city public health ordinances, statistical material, and examples of quarantine placards.
