Historical Note

The 1865 laws of Montana Territory describe the Territorial Treasurer's primary duties as follows: receiving all money belonging to the territory and disbursing the same upon receipt of the Montana Territorial Auditor's warrant; keeping an account of all monies received and disbursed; submitting a report quarterly to the auditor; and reporting annually to the legislature on the condition of the treasury and its operation in the preceding year. The territorial treasurers were: John J. Hull (1864-1866), John. S. Rockefellow (1866-1867), William G. Barkley (1867-1871), Leander W. Frary (1869--never served), Richard O. Hickman (1871-1875), Daniel H. Weston (1875-1887), and William G. Preuitt (1887-1889).

When Montana became a state in 1889, the Office of the State Treasurer replaced the Territorial Treasurer, and the office was made an elected position within the executive branch of Montana's government.
