Biographical Note
Reverend U. G. Murphy (1869-1967) was born in Maryland, five generations from Ireland and spent 14 years as a missionary in Japan. He worked in ministry with the Methodist Protestant Church in California for a time in the San Joaquin Valley after returning from Japan in 1908. Due to his time in Japan and being able to speak Japanese, he was often asked by the Japanese association to speak for them when the growing discrimination of Japanese Americans began in California. Rev. U. G. Murphy died in Seattle in 1967.
