Historical Note

John A. Minion was a historian and writer on various Western subjects. He authored The Death of a Survivor (1964) about Christian Madsen, a private in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He also authored the book The Riddle of Annie Elinor Jones, Pal of Custer (1964) about Anna "Annie" Elinor Jones, a vivandière who served during the Civil War and later traveled with George Armstrong Custer's regiment. Additionally, he wrote an article titled, “Negro Soldiers in the Confederate Army” (1969) that appeared in the June-July 1970 issue of The Crisis, the official magazine of the National Association for Advancment of Colored People.

Content Description

The collection contains copies of research materials, information sheets, correspondence, newspaper clippings, articles, and photographs mostly regarding George Armstrong Custer and Anna "Annie" Elinor Jones. Included are manuscripts for Minion’s book, The Riddle of Annie Elinor Jones, Pal of Custer, along with research material for the book. Also included are newspaper clippings, documents, and articles concerning African-American soldiers in the Confederate Army, slavery, and other topics, including involvement of Annie Elinor Jones with Union and Confederate officers.
