Biographical Note
Lewis P. Larsen came to the United States from Denmark in 1895 and settled in Salt Lake City. In 1897 he went to Wallace, ID and entered the mining business, forming the partnership of Larsen & Greenough. Larsen left Idaho in 1910 and established the town of Metaline Falls, Pend Oreille County, WA in conjunction with development of deposits of cement rock by the Inland Portland Cement Co. at the site. Larsen then incorporated the Pend Oreille Mines and Metals Company, and together with Jens Jensen, a fellow Dane and secretary-treasurer of the company, they opened the Metaline zinc-lead mining district.
Content Description
The bulk of the collection consists of the records of the Pend Oreille Mines and Metals Company, 1912-1956. Papers of the three main individuals, Lewis P. Larsen, Jens E. Jensen (secretary-treasurer), and W.L. Zeigler (mining engineer) are spread throughout the collection. Larsen and Jensen were intimately involved with the events of Metaline Falls and Pend Oreille County. Their activities included school board membership, war bond drives, insurance sales, and a variety of political positions. Zeigler was a competent mining engineer and his work is also well documented.
