Biographical Note

Antonio Pace (1914–2004) was a distinguished scholar and luthier. Born to Italian immigrants in Potsdam, New York, on July 7, 1914, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1935 and a Master’s degree from Syracuse University in 1937, followed by a Ph.D. in Romance Languages from Princeton University in 1943. Pace was a faculty member at Syracuse University from 1939 to 1967, specializing in Italian literature and science, and later became a professor at the University of Washington. His scholarly work included numerous publications on Italian-American cultural relations, and he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1948 to complete Benjamin Franklin and Italy (1958). In 1963, Pace was honored with a Knighthood in the Order of Merit from the Republic of Italy.

Pace was also deeply involved in academic administration, serving on several committees, including the national selection committee for Fulbright awards. Upon retiring from teaching, he pursued a new passion for crafting string instruments as a luthier at Hammond Ashley Associates in Seattle. There, he became known for his innovative violin designs.

He was married to Mary Rioch and had two children. Antonio Pace passed away on February 18, 2004, in Seattle. Sources: The Seattle Times and Syracuse University
