University of Washington, School of Medicine, Department of Neurology records, January 1996-June 2017

The University of Washington School of Medicine's Department of Neurology officially formed in 1995 when funds from the School were procured to establish two named professorships, leading to a granting of departmental status after a few decades of contestation due to prior understandings and designations of Neurology underneath the larger umbrella of medicine. The department's formation also included the incorporation of the Division of Pediatric Neurology, the Regional Epilepsy Center, the EEG laboratories, and the development of electromyography (EMG) under Neurology. Dr. Bruce Ransom, MD, PhD was appointed as inaugural Chair of Neurology. In 2021, Ransom retired and Dr. Thabele (Bay) Leslie-Mazwi, MD was appointed as the new department chair and the Warren and Jermaine Magnuson Endowed Chair in Medicine for Neurosciences. Clinical facilities include the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital, VA Puget Sound Health Case System, and Seattle Children's Hospital.
