John Hart (1921-2015) was a ballet dancer and director who served as artistic director for Ballet West from 1985 to 1997. This collection contains a photograph album containing travel photographs taken by Hart and documenting trips throughout Europe and California between 1952 and 1953.

Biographical Note

Francis John Hart was born on July, 4, 1921, in London, England to Ivy Hart and Frank L. Hart. Hart began studying at the Royal Academy of Dance under Judith Espinosa when he was twelve years old. He joined the Vic-Wells Ballet in 1938 and soon became a principal dancer. Between 1942 to 1946, Hart served in the British Royal Air Force. After his World War II service, Hart returned to England and began working with the Royal Ballet. Between 1962 and 1970 he served as Assistant Director of the Royal Ballet. Between 1971 and 1980, Hart served as artistic director of the Performing Arts Council of the Transvaal Ballet in South Africa. In 1980, he worked as artistic director for the Ballet of San Diego. In 1985, he moved to Utah to take the position of artistic director for Ballet West, a position that he held until his retirement in 1997. In this position, Hart was often credited for turning Ballet West into a world renowned company.

John Hart died on February 8, 2015.

Content Description

The John Hart photograph collection consists of one photograph album containing 143 photographs of travel to Portugal, Spain, France, and Pebble Beach, California. Includes images taken of historic sites, beaches, bull fights, and a Silverstone Production sports car event. The photographs date from 1952 and 1953.
