Biographical Note
The Columbian was a safety newsletter for Grand Coulee Dam employees printed by the project's general contractor. The publication was initially titled M.W.A.K. Columbian, with "M.W.A.K." standing for Mason-Walsh-Atkinson-Kier, the company contracted to complete the initial phase of construction. In 1937, the second phase was awarded to Consolidated Builders, Inc., a conglomerate of several companies, including M.W.A.K. After Consolidated Builders began work on the dam in 1938, the publication was retitled The Columbian.
