Historical Note

Andy Heyward was a cartoon writer, editor, and businessman prevalent in the entertainment Industry. He was born in February 1949 in New York City and started his career as an assistant to Joe Barbera at Hanna-Barbera, for the show Scooby’s All-Star Laff-a-Lympics. He served in various roles at Hanna-Barbera Productions, including writer and story editor. In the 1980s, Heyward co-founded DIC Entertainment and led it as CEO until it was acquired by the Cookie Jar Group. Under his leadership, DIC produced iconic cartoons such as The Real Ghostbusters, Inspector Gadget, Madeline, and Alvin and the Chipmunks. After selling DIC in 2008, Heyward, along with his wife Evelyn, launched A Squared Entertainment (A2) in 2009. This new company created educational shows like Stan Lee’s Super Seven, The Secret Millionaires Club, Gisele and the Green Team, and Martha and Friends, collaborating with notable personalities like Stan Lee and Warren Buffett to teach children valuable lessons in life and finance. A2 also produced Thomas Edison’s Secret Lab, which focused on science education. In 2013, A2 merged with Genius Brands to form Genius Brands International, which was rebranded as Kartoon Studios in 2023, managing a vast catalog of animated content.

DIC Entertainment was established in Burbank, California, in 1982 by Andy Heyward, Jean Chalopin, and Bruno Bianchi. To streamline its production processes, DIC opened a satellite animation facility in Japan in 1985. By 1986, Heyward and other investors had taken control of the company, which was renamed DIC Animation City in 1989. The company expanded its reach by forming DIC Entertainment LP in 1993, a joint venture with Capital Cities/ABC, and subsequently became a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company in 1996. Heyward repurchased DIC Enterprises in 2000 and took it public in 2005. The acquisition of DIC by the Cookie Jar Group was completed in July 2008, marking the end of its independent operations.
