Historical Note
Albert R. Kitzhaber (1915-2010) was a professor of English at the University of Oregon. Kitzhaber completed an undergraduate degree at Iowa's Coe College in 1939. He earned a master's degree from Washington State University in 1941 and served in World War II as a Russian instructor. In 1953, he completed a doctorate at the University of Washington. During his career, Kitzhaber taught at Iowa State University, Utah State College, and the University of Kansas and was a research professor at Dartmouth University. He joined the faculty of the University of Oregon in 1962, where he taught until retirement in 1980.
Content Description
The Albert R. Kitzhaber faculty papers contain professional correspondence, publications, manuscripts, as well as personal mementos and memorabilia that document Kitzhaber's long academic career. The collection includes a substaintial amount of material regarding the Portland High School Curriculum Study and "Project English," a major study of college courses in Freshman English.
