Historical Note
Carroll H. Parmelee (1861-1919), an attorney, came to Buffalo, Wyoming, in 1886. In 1892, he was appointed register of the federal land office in Buffalo. He was state Superintendent of Public Instruction in Wyoming in 1898. He was elected judge of Wyoming's Fourth Judicial District in 1904 and was reelected in 1910. He moved to Sheridan, Wyoming, in 1910 and lived there until shortly before his death. He married Mary Manley in 1892.
Content Description
The collection includes letters of Carroll H. Parmelee to his wife and a 1905 diary of Parmelee. Also included are letters between Parmelee and the governor concerning the possibility of calling a grand jury to examine violence against sheep herds; court documents concerning John Mahoney, a client of Parmelee, accused of moving scabby sheep through Johnson County; and miscellaneous other materials.
