Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Pullman Chapter of the National Organization for Women began as a student organization in approximately 1972. The purpose of the chapter, and the national organization, is promoting equal rights and dignity for women. Over the span of its existence, the chapter was involved in activities designed to raise feminist consciousness and follow a wide range of issues related to gender equality.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Georgia Yuan was an active member and representative of the Pullman Chapter of NOW in the 1980s and 1990s. She was also a member of the NOW National Board after being elected as a Northwest Regional Representative from 1990-1992. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Geology from Oberlin College, a Master of Science in Applied Earth Science from Stanford University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Idaho. Ms. Yuan was chief legal counsel for the University of Idaho before becoming the first general counsel for Smith College in 2003. She also served as Deputy General Counsel and Deputy Under Secretary for the United States Department of Education. Georgia Yuan is currently an executive leadership coach in Washington D.C.

Judy Meuth was also an active member and president of NOW. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and in Education from Southern Methodist University and a Master of Science in Wildlife Biology from Texas A&M University. Meuth established an alternative K-12 school in Austin, TX before joining the Washington State University (WSU) faculty in 1990. She was instrumental in the growth and development of the Women’s Studies Program and Women’s Studies Department at WSU. She retired from WSU in 2013 as a part of the newly formed Critical Culture, Gender, and Race Studies Department, where she served as Undergraduate Director. Judy Meuth is currently leader of the Palouse Citizens' Climate Lobby.
