Western "war canoeing" as a recreational activity was mimicked and appropriated by Canadian settlers in Vancouver in the late 19th century and became immensely popular, especially after large gatherings of Native peoples were outlawed in 1922. It continues to be one of the most enduring "Canadian" watersports, though leagues and clubs often remain separated from Native canoeing communities and practices.

Description: Postcard of a drawing,The Evolution of a Sourdough, showing the physical evolution of a typical Alaska Gold Rush miner over a 12 month period. The drawing depicts a man at arrival in the Klondike in suit and tie, then 2 months later with a beard, four months later with long hair, six months later with longer beard and hair, nine months later with hair and beard obscuring most of his face, and twelve months later as a pot of sourdough.
During the California Gold Rush of 1848-1855, French bakers brought sourdough breadmaking techniques to Northern California. This sourdough tradition was carried into Alaska and the western Canadian territories during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898, where experienced miners and other settlers frequently carried a pouch of sourdough "starter" either around their neck or on a belt. Old hands came to be called "sourdoughs", a term that is still applied to any Alaskan old-timer.
