Historical Note

The mission of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle is to ensure Jewish survival and enhance the quality of Jewish life by meeting needs locally, in Israel, and worldwide. The Federation was established in 1936 as the Federated Jewish Fund. The name was changed in 1951 to Federated Fund and Council of Seattle and in 1966 to its present form. Samuel Holcenberg, the first Executive Director, served 1943-1964. Succeeding Directors have been Albert Dorner, 1964-71, Arnold Feder (acting Executive Director), 1971-1972, and Murray Shiff, 1972- .

The Holocaust Memorial Committee was formed in 1979 to make recommendations to the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle's Board of Directors regarding the nature, location, and funding of a memorial to victims of the Holocaust. The Committee grew out of the 1978 Holocaust Memorial Subcommittee of the Community Relations Committee. The memorial was dedicated on November 29, 1981, and is located on the grounds of the Stroum Jewish Community Center, Mercer Island, Washington.
