Historical Note

Donald Knox (1936-1986) was an American author, director and producer of television documentaries. His two best known book titles are Death March: The Survivors of Bataan (1981) and The Korean War: Uncertain Victory (1985) with additional text by Alfred Coppel. Knox served as the Executive Producer of Documentaries and Specials at KTCA-TV in Minneapolis/ St. Paul. Prior to working for KTCA, he worked in Chicago at WTTW-TV, where he produced award-winning TV programs on subjects like the American Indian, a Ukrainian neighborhood, an international opera company, and world championship polo. Knox also worked in Boston, New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. His 1968 program “One Nation Indivisible” won the George Foster Peabody Award. He won Emmy awards for films on Monet, Renoir, and the Lyric Opera in Chicago. His program “Paintings” was given the Ohio State Award. From 1970 to 1972, Knox worked for the American Film Institute’s Center for Advanced Film Studies, where he wrote the critically acclaimed The Magic Factory book dealing with the golden age of the Hollywood musical.

This collection contains oral histories conducted by Donald Knox about the Bataan Death March and American P.O.W.s in World War II. Also included are transcripts of the oral histories, and professional files that relate to his book Death March: The Survivors of Bataan. These include manuscripts of the chapters, photographs and negatives, and research materials.
