Biographical Note
Fred A. Granata was born in Portland, Oregon, and was one of three children of Italian immigrants. He graduated from Columbia Preparatory School in 1949, then served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. In 1957, he earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Oregon School of Law, after which he spent 32 years in private law practice and another 18 years as senior counsel for a Portland law firm; the Oregon State Bar recognized Granata for his 50 years of service in 2007. Granata frequently traveled, including annual trips to Italy. He also held a lifelong interest in history, and spent his later years in the study of historical topics, particularly relating to Oregon, and the history of Italians and Italian-Americans in Oregon. He died in July 2010.

Large sections of the collection concern Granata's research into the history of Italian-Americans in Oregon, including his histories of the Catholic churches St. Michael the Archangel and St. Vincent de Paul Parish's Downtown Chapel in Portland, Oregon. The materials also concern Granata's research on World War II prisoners of war held in the United States, particularly Italian prisoners who volunteered for the American-organized Italian Service Units, such as the 25th Italian Service Unit stationed at the Vancouver Barracks in Washington state. Additional topics represented in the collection include war crimes, with an emphasis on the Nuremberg Trials, Nuremberg Trials judge James T. Brand, and the trial of Tomoyuki Yamashita and prosecutor Robert M. Kerr; the early 20th century trials of Marie Equi and Emma Goldman, and their significance in relation to civil liberties and governmental powers; general research regarding Italy and Italian-Americans; biographical information about Italian fashion designer Emilio Pucci; and biographical information about writer Joaquin Miller. In addition to Granata's own writings, drafts, notes, and correspondence, the collection includes large amounts of photocopied materials and web page printouts, as well as some original photographs and documents. Subseries 2: St. Michael the Archangel Parish and St. Vincent de Paul Parish Downtown Chapel, circa 1880-2001, (bulk 1994-2001)
Contains materials created and gathered by Granata regarding St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Portland and St. Vincent de Paul Parish's Downtown Chapel for St. Michael's centennial celebration and for Granata's histories, "The Biography of a Parish: Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1894-1994" and "The Urban Missionary: Portland's Downtown Chapel, 1919-1994: St. Vincent de Paul Parish."
The parish of St. Michael the Archangel Church began as Portland, Oregon's first Catholic house of worship in 1851. After changing location several times, a church was erected in 1894 at what would become SW Mill and 4th; this church still served the parish congregation in the early 21st century.
The St. Vincent de Paul Parish's Downtown Chapel was established in 1943, following two earlier attempts at running a Cathlolic parish in downtown Portland. It was located at 516 W Burnside Street until 1973, when US Bank purchased the property for its new headquarters; the chapel then moved to 601 W Burnside Street.

Subseries 2: Yamashita Trial and Robert M. Kerr, 1945-2009, (bulk 2008-2009)
Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita (also written as Tomobumi Yamashita) was tried in late 1945 for war crimes committed in the Philippines. The defense claimed that Yamashita had not been aware of the atrocities, let alone condoned or ordered them. Yamashita was nevertheless found guilty and executed on February 26, 1946. The trial was notable for producing the controversial "Yamashita principle," whereby military commanders were to be held responsible for the actions of their troops, regardless of whether the commanders themselves were aware of said actions.
Robert M. Kerr was a Portland, Oregon, lawyer who served as a major during World War II, and acted as chief prosecutor in the Yamashita trial.

Series 6: Research on Emilio Pucci, 1937-2009, (bulk 2001-2005)
Emilio Pucci (1914-1992) was an Italian fashion designer. Born into a Florentine noble family, he attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon, from 1936-1937, where he founded the Reed College Ski Team, and wrote a thesis defending the Italian fascist system of government (he would later become disillusioned with fascism). During World War II, he notably helped Mussolini's daughter, Edda Ciano, and her children flee to Switzerland when her husband, Italian diplomat Galeazzo Ciano, was imprisoned and executed by Mussolini, and assisted in smuggling Galeazzo Ciano's diaries out of Italy. Pucci submitted a report about these activities to the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency. After the war, Pucci became a fashion designer. He died in 1992. A ski run on Mt. Hood, Oregon, is named for him.
Some of Granata's original folder titles were retained.
