Biographical Note
Gordon Solie joined the music faculty at Portland State University’s in 1960. Solie aslo played the bassoon with chamber ensembles, the symphony, and the Portland Opera Orchestra. As personnel director for the Britt Music Festival, he helped recruit its first orchestra in 1963. After retiring, he formed the music publishing company Editions VIENTO.
Content Description
Collection consists of Oregon-related sheet music, phonograph records, and related material collected by Gordon Solie. Sheet music relates topically to Oregon and includes Oregon events such as the Portland Rose Festival and the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition as well as versions of the Oregon state song. Oregon composers and lyricists represented include the DeMoss family and Bertha Lorton. Phonograph recordings include numerous musicians and groups including the Singing Sentinels, Herman Kenin and the Multnomah Hotel Orchestra (Portland, Or.), the Castle Jazz Band, and Fess Parker.
