Historical Note
Seattle Shopping News was a small local Seattle newspaper, specializing in advertising for local retail, published between 1922 and 1973. The newspaper was proofed twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the 1930s and Mondays and Thursdays during the 1950s, by the Seattle Shopping News Association, and often included retrospectives on local history, as well as short pieces on local, national and international news. In 1973, under the auspices of general manager Philip R. Humbert, the paper, along with four other Seattle publications, was sold by the News Publishing Company to United Media, Inc., of Phoenix, Arizona. Around 1974 or 1975, the Seattle publications, including Seattle Shopping News , were amalgamated under the title University Herald Today.
Historical Background
Spotlighting Seattle's Story was proofed twice in Seattle Shopping News , once in 1930-1932 and once between May 7, 1951 and September 30, 1954 under the title Seattle in Review: Highlights in a Century of Growth , with differences in artistic and textual content. This collection contains drawings from both print runs.
Content Description
Collection of pieces of original artwork and newspaper proofs for the Seattle Shopping News historical series "Spotlighting Seattle's Story." The material is arranged into "episodes." The episodes in Seattle history include stories about historical figures, events, buildings, sights, industries, and other topics. The artwork is ink drawings made by several artists including W.S. Gamble, Cone, Joe Velez and Mero (possibly David Mero). Artwork by Cone and Velez is exclusive to the 1951-1954 run, which also included some artwork by Gamble and Mero. Episodes that include artwork by two artists from different decades are indicated by both artist name listing and multiple dates. While the two print runs are mostly similar, each has a small number of unique episodes. These episodes are indicated by notes.
