Ream photograph collection contains images of golfing, camping, hiking, skiing, climbing, and river running in Utah and Wyoming and dates from approximately 1950 to the 1980s.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Richard Frank “Rich” Ream (1917-2008) was born on December 23, 1917 and grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. He studied engineering at the University of Utah; after graduation, he worked for General Electric; while working there, he designed and tested jet engines and worked for Geneva Steel during World War II. Ream also worked for his family’s auto parts shop in Salt Lake City. He was associated with Salt Lake City's Alpenbock Climbing Club, serving as an advisor and mentor to the group. In 1963, Ream moved to Jackson, Wyoming, where he managed a ski shop in the winter and worked as a carpenter in the summers. Ream was a published photographer, and documented his outdoor pursuits, including hiking, climbing, and skiing, particularly in the Wasatch and Teton mountain ranges. In addition to his outdoor pursuits, Ream enjoyed numerous arts and crafts, including: model boat building, watercolor, and wood carving. Rich Ream died on February 1, 2008.

The Richard F. Ream photograph collection consists of 3 boxes containing 2,709 photographs, slides, digital scans and negatives of recreational climbing, skiing, and river running related images. Folders 1 and 2 of Box 1 are digital only, scanned from photograph albums retained by the donors; the remainder of the box of color 35mm slides. Box 2 contains color 35mm slides. Box 3 contains 35mm color slides, black-and-white photographs and negatives, color photographs, and 1 tintype. Box 3 Folder 12 is also digital only, consisting of a CD of digitized images created by the Ream family.

The images depict Ream and his family engaging in outdoor sports from 1950 to the 1980s, with most images dating from the 1960s. Locations include Wasatch back country, Alta, Lone Peak, Mt. Teewinot, Triple Glacier, Mt. Moran, Grand Teton, Pete’s Rock, Nepal, Wind Rivers, Glen Canyon, Glen Canyon Dam, Colorado River, Arches National Monument, Alaska, California, Colorado, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Nepal and more.
