Historical Note

Claude Jerome Lapp (1892-1973) was an official with the National Academy of Sciences for nearly twenty years. Lapp graduated from Albion College in 1917, then received an M.A. from the University Illinois in 1920. He then earned a Ph.D. in physics two years later. From 1922 to 1930, Lapp was an associate professor of physics at Iowa State University when he was promoted to professor. He continued at Iowa State until 1947 when he joined the National Academy of Sciences. Beginning as assistant director of the office of scientific personnel, Lapp eventually became director of special projects before retiring in 1966.
